A Song of Ice and Fire

Strap yourself in! I've never seen anything like the first book in this series. If you enjoy typical epic fantasy stories and are not into overly wordy descriptions of graphic and violent death and injury then perhaps you should stop right here.

The first book left us all hungering for more, however now that we're waiting for the sixth book in the series we're starting to wonder how this extremely huge story is going to be wound back into a reasonable and interesting conclusion. The characters which initially were engaging and interesting seem to being spread a little thin with so many story arcs going at once that it is difficult to keep track of where everyone is and to touch base with everyone in one novel. In some books you may not even see mention of characters that took centre stage in the last installment which can be disappointing and lead to a disjointed experience.

Despite this, the books are still huge - even where they have been split into two paperbacks, they are still huge! I mean seriously consider investing in a Kindle if you have not already. A Dance with Dragons is quite literally the reason I switched to Kindle because I simply couldn't drag the huge book around with me to read on the bus, and even reading in the evenings became a chore.

Lastly, this series has become the popular television adaptation on HBO. I haven't seen the show as yet, however I am wondering if the actors will still be young enough to pull off the characters when the series has ended. If previous dates are anything to go on it could be another 10-12 years before we get the last two installments of this series. I'll read them for completion, but I really wonder if George RR Martin is getting bored of this story, or if he has just let it get so unwieldy that he is finding it hard to control.

For all that, it is a very good series and I do recommend the series simply because the way that he handles the main characters during conflict and violence is some of the best story telling I've seen.

A Game of Thrones

A Clash of Kings

A Storm of Swords

A Feast for Crows

A Dance with Dragons
